Three sheets joined into one wide scene, *Fūryū Genji: Yuki no nagame* ("Elegant Genji: Gazing at the Snow") takes its title from *The Tale of Genji*, the eleventh-century court romance that Edo-period artists often reimagined in contemporary dress and settings. The print's signatures credit two of the period's leading ukiyo-e designers: the "Toyokuni" signature on the side panels belongs to Utagawa Kunisada, and the "Hiroshige" signature on the center panel belongs to Utagawa Hiroshige, which makes the work a rare joint project. Its winter snow theme and women's figures reflect the popularity of such scenes in the 1850s, when collaborations between artists were a common way to produce large, multi-sheet designs.
