Three sheets join into one wide scene of Hachimantarō Yoshiie, the warrior son of Minamoto no Yoriyoshi, paired with Sodehagi, the wife of Abe no Sadatō. The Abe clan's eleventh-century rebellion against the Minamoto was dramatized many times on the Edo stage, and this print turns that history into a theatrical moment. Dated to around 1847 or 1848, the design bears the signature of Toyokuni, the leading Utagawa master of the period, and shows how actor prints of the late Edo years combined likeness, costume, and dramatic pose.
