This vertical oban print, dated 1863, shows the Kabuki actor Ichikawa Danjūrō VII in the role of Akushichibyōe, the brawling warrior character drawn from the Heike-era legends, with the title's reference to a blind biwa player named Matsunami. It belongs to the *Tōsei mitate sanjūrokkasen* (*Modern Allegory of the 36 Poets*) series, which dressed contemporary actors in the guise of classical poets and stories. The chirimen-e (crepe-textured) printing technique gives the paper a crinkled surface, a finish prized in the 1860s. Danjūrō VII was a leading figure of the late Edo stage, and his bold aragoto style made him a frequent subject for woodblock artists.
