*Daiichi no maki*, roughly "The First Chapter," belongs to a series that reworks *The Tale of Genji*, the court novel written in Japan around the early eleventh century, and dresses its characters in the fashions of the mid-nineteenth century. Printed in 1858 as a vertical oban color woodcut, it shows how Edo-period print makers used a classic text as a frame for the clothing, hairstyles and patterned textiles of their own day. The old story matters less here than the costumes, which were the main attraction for buyers. The layered robes and decorative details are worth a close look, since they record the taste of a city that followed fashion closely.
