The Floating Bridge of Dreams" takes its title from the final chapter of *The Tale of Genji*, the eleventh-century court novel by Murasaki Shikibu, in which the heroine Ukifune is torn between two suitors and nearly drowns herself in a river. This 1854 vertical chuban print belongs to *Inaka Genji*, or "Rustic Genji," a series that moved the novel's courtly figures into country settings and everyday scenes. It is signed with the Toyokuni name, and its subjects include a boat on the water. Woodblock prints like this were made for a broad urban audience, so they often mixed literary parody with humor.
