Rain falls across the riverbank at Ōumayagashi, a landing on the Edo waterways, while pedestrians press forward beneath oiled paper umbrellas. The print belongs to the *Tōto* series, or *Scenes of the Capital*, issued around 1834 in the horizontal oban format that made views of Edo's well-known places popular with buyers. The weather is as much the subject as the location: the slick ground, the water, and the umbrellas show how ordinary people moved through the city in bad conditions. Color woodblock prints like this were made through many carved blocks, each inked in a separate color, so the soft gradations of the sky and water reflect the skill of the workshop.
