Rain turns a seashore walk into a study in shelter, with figures moving along the sand beneath their umbrellas. The record places the scene in Japanese country life of the 1830s through 1860s, the late Edo period, when artists such as Hiroshige made weather and travel central to landscape prints. This sheet is a later reprint from the Showa era (1926 to 1989) by Takamizawa, so its color and line reflect modern printing of an older design. Notice how the repeated umbrellas set the rhythm of the composition.
