Rather than the actors and beauties that dominate most Japanese print collections, this sheet shows English people and their clothing, a subject new to many readers in 1854. It comes from *Gaiban yōbō zuga*, an illustrated guide to foreign appearances published in Japan that year, as the country was opening to Western visitors after Commodore Matthew Perry's return to Edo Bay. Makers of such guides typically relied on secondhand reports and foreign images, so the figures mix close observation with guesswork about foreign dress. Today the sheet records how Japanese viewers first pictured the English.
