Rather than a city view or an actor portrait, this sheet turns to the English and their dress, a subject that drew sudden Japanese curiosity in 1854. It comes from *Gaiban yōbō zuga*, a picture book of foreign appearances published by Tōshundō that year, as American and then British ships were pressing Japan for treaties after Commodore Perry's visit. Printed in color from carved woodblocks, the pages record the tailoring, hats, and manners that a Japanese viewer would have found strange, so they work as both entertainment and early visual reporting on the outside world.
