An Englishman on horseback, smoking a pipe in Western riding dress, is the subject of this sheet, which sets it apart from the other foreign figures in the series. It comes from *Bankoku zukushi* ("All the Countries of the World"), issued in 1860, only a year after Yokohama and other ports opened to foreign trade and residents began settling in the treaty settlements. The artist, Utagawa Yoshitora, was one of the best-known designers of these "foreigner pictures," which combined close attention to unfamiliar clothing and habits with a good measure of caricature. The tailored coat, boots, and pipe show how Japanese printmakers were recording new foreign customs for a curious public.
