A single page from *Kotowaza heso no yadogae*, a ten-volume illustrated book of Japanese sayings published in Ōsaka by the firm of Wataya Kihē, shows a heavyset man striding along with his arms flung wide. The library's catalog dates the print to about the 1830s, and the book's playful title suggests the images were meant to illustrate proverbs with humor. Ōsaka publishers like Wataya produced many such comic books, which offer a lively counterpart to the actor and beauty prints more often associated with Edo. This page was included in the Library of Congress's 2001 exhibition on *ukiyo-e*.
