Its title, *Shōjiki o mamoru mono wa tenjin kore o sutezu* ("Heaven forsakes no honest man"), is a Japanese proverb, and the print turns that saying into a scene about charity toward the poor, with women and their clothing as central concerns. Made in 1850, during the Kaei era, it is a color woodcut on thin hōsho paper, cut by Koizumi Minokichi from a design by Toshichika. Prints like this were popular in the mid-nineteenth century, when sermonizing images on virtue and hardship reached a wide urban audience. Looking closely at the figures' garments and gestures shows how the artist used everyday dress to signal social standing.
