Centered on Nagasaki, the only port where the Tokugawa government allowed limited trade with foreigners, this woodcut is less a conventional world map than a reference sheet. It gives distances from Nagasaki to places across the world and names the feudal lords assigned to guard the coast. Small insets show American and Russian soldiers, a sign of the unease felt before Commodore Perry's squadron reached Japan in 1853. Printed in 1850, the sheet shows how Japanese readers were beginning to picture a wider world and the pressures that might come from it.
