Set in Mukōjima, the riverside district across the Sumida River from central Edo, this woodcut is one of Utagawa Kuniyoshi's entries in the series *Popular Restaurants of the Eastern Capital*. Its subject is Miyamoto Musashi, the seventeenth-century swordsman whose legend was a staple of kabuki and popular theater by the 1850s, and the record links the print to performances and to actors of that decade. Kuniyoshi, one of the most celebrated woodblock artists of the late Edo period, often turned such heroic figures into dramatic images. The print dates to 1852, a time when theatrical portraits and famous-place views were among the most sought-after designs in Edo.
