Shirauo, the translucent whitebait that Edo cooks prized each spring, is the subject of this small print. Its cookery theme and compact size, about 10.5 by 13.6 centimeters, mark it as a kogata surimono, a privately commissioned print made for poetry circles and seasonal greetings rather than wide sale. The designer, Ryūryūkyo Shinsai, worked within that refined tradition, where color woodblock printing produced intimate, carefully composed images. Dating to about 1804 to 1818, it offers a close view of food culture in late Edo-period Japan.
