This shikishi-format print is titled for shibori kanzashi, hair ornaments made from tie-dyed silk, and it shows the fashionable accessories of the late Edo period. Shikishi are square or near-square cards, and this one belongs to the surimono tradition of privately commissioned prints, which were often issued as greeting cards, gifts, or announcements among poets and patrons. The record dates the design to roughly 1818 to 1830, a period when Edo's townspeople were buying more luxury goods, including textile-based hair decorations. The print was made later from the original blocks, so its colors reflect a reproduction rather than an earliest impression.
