Sawamura Sōjūrō III, shown here in the role of Ogishi Kurando, was a leading Edo kabuki actor in the 1790s. This 1794 color woodcut belongs to a series of actor portraits, *Yakusha butai no sugatae*, which publishers produced to bring the look of stage performers to theatergoers and collectors. Ogishi Kurando comes from the story of the forty-seven ronin, a samurai tale that was a staple of kabuki and puppet theater. The sheet is a vertical oban nishikie, and its condition is unusually fine for a print of its age.
