*Tamanoi* belongs to the series *Utai bangumi*, or "singing performances," which paired prints with the chanted texts of Nō, the court-derived theater of masked dance and song. The sheet is a shikishiban nishikie surimono, a small color woodcut usually commissioned for private circles rather than sold in shops, which let printers use finer pigments, shaded gradations, and other refinements. Dated 1820, it reflects the late Edo period, when Nō was studied by townspeople as well as samurai, and amateur chanting groups often exchanged prints like this one as keepsakes.
