This vertical oban color woodcut from 1796 portrays the Edo kabuki actor Nakayama Tomisaburō, and its record credits the designer as Kabukidō Enkyō (1749-1803). Actor prints like this one were a major commercial genre in Edo, sold to theatergoers who wanted to remember favorite performers, their stage roles, and the fashions they set. The print also reflects the close ties between the kabuki theaters and the woodblock publishers who made these likenesses, and it is a useful record of how actors were presented to the public in the 1790s.
