Kanbara was a post town on the Tōkaidō, the highway linking Edo and Kyoto, and this print shows it in deep winter, with snow covering the village and a woman and a bull rider moving through the scene. The series it belongs to, the Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō, is Hiroshige's best-known set of landscape prints, showing travelers and villagers along the road. Its vertical format and color woodcut technique reflect the popularity of the series in the late 1830s and early 1840s, when such prints were widely sold to travelers and collectors.
