Nihonbashi, the bridge in central Edo where the Tōkaidō began, opens the title, followed by Shinagawa and Kawasaki, the first two post towns on the road toward Kyoto. The subjects recorded for the sheet are clamming, cherry trees, and fish, scenes tied to the shore that travelers passed near Shinagawa. It belongs to the Tōkaidō harimaze zue series, a set of vertical oban views dated to about 1848 to 1854. Series like this were popular with travelers and armchair readers alike, letting people picture the stations without leaving home.
