Hakone, a post town on the Tōkaidō road and a known hot-spring resort, sets this print apart, with Mount Fuji rising in the distance. It is a shikishiban surimono, a small, privately commissioned format used for poetry circles and seasonal greetings rather than general sale. The signature reads Ichiyōsai Kuniyoshi, and the record dates it to about 1829 or 1830, early in the artist's career. Travelers stopped at Hakone to rest and bathe before crossing the mountains, so the scene works as both a travel memory and a tribute to Fuji.
