Senju Great Bridge crosses the Sumida River at the northeastern edge of Edo, where the road toward Nikkō began its climb into the countryside. Hiroshige designed this vertical color woodblock print in 1856 for *One Hundred Famous Views of Edo*, one of his last major landscape series. He died two years later, in 1858. Notice how the bridge's long diagonal cuts across the river and how the small travelers on it turn a simple crossing into a scene of everyday journey.
