The place named in this print is Zōshigaya, a hilltop district on the western edge of Edo, where a teahouse offered visitors a clear view of Mount Fuji on the horizon. Tsutaya Kichizō was an Edo publisher who issued color woodcuts like this one in 1858, a few years after the Ansei earthquake had shaken the city. Views of Fuji from teahouses, temples, and hills were among the most popular subjects for color prints of the period, since they let city residents enjoy the mountain's outline without leaving town. The print is worth a close look for its layered composition, with the teahouse, the surrounding landscape, and the distant peak arranged to draw the eye outward.
