Yotsuya Naitō-Shinjuku shows one of the post towns on the Kōshū Kaidō, the highway that ran west out of Edo toward the mountains. Shinjuku was a busy stop where travelers rested and horses were changed, and the record's subjects of city life and horses reflect that traffic. Published in 1857 in Utagawa Hiroshige's *One Hundred Famous Views of Edo*, this is a second impression, so its colors and inking come from a later printing of the blocks. The series, issued in the final years of Hiroshige's career, is known for turning everyday streets and landmarks into quiet records of the city.
