Whaling off the Goto Islands, in the former Hizen Province on Kyushu's western coast, is the subject of this color woodcut from 1859. The Goto grounds were among Japan's best-known whaling areas in the late Edo period, where crews worked together to net whales and haul them ashore for processing. The print belongs to the series *Shokoku meisho hyakkei*, a set of famous provincial views, and its focus on a working industry sets it apart from the scenic landscapes that dominated such series.
