Bunbuku chagama refers to a tea kettle from Japanese folklore that a tanuki, the raccoon dog often called a badger in English, has transformed itself into, a tale that appealed to Edo-period artists. Here the creature appears as an ink-and-color drawing on thin handmade paper, one of a group of pages once bound together and traditionally linked to the Hokusai school. The quick, economical brushwork typical of such sketchbook pages shows how artists of the 1830s and 1840s worked out ideas before committing them to finished prints. The title was supplied by cataloguers, not inscribed by the artist.
