Mount Fuji rises above a misty shoreline framed by pine trees, a motif that Japanese printmakers returned to again and again. Views of the mountain from the coast, with soft fog softening the water and the lower slopes, were a favorite of the woodblock tradition in the nineteenth century, when travel and landscape were popular subjects for urban buyers. Pines, often bent by sea wind, gave artists a way to frame the peak and add a sense of place. Looking closely, you can see how the printmaker used gradations of color and open areas of paper to suggest mist rather than drawing it outright.
