A foreign rider seated on a horse between two Japanese men, with a farmer walking alongside on foot, makes this woodcut stand out, since foreign figures were relatively rare subjects in Japanese prints of this period. Matsushima Seikichi cut and printed the color woodblock in 1850, when Japan's contact with outsiders was tightly restricted, so the scene offers a glimpse of an unusual encounter. Its title was devised by Library of Congress staff rather than taken from the print, so the description of the scene is their reading of the image.
