This color woodcut is a two-sheet diptych, so its composition runs across a pair of joined sheets, and the Library of Congress record credits the engraver Matsushima Seikichi. The record gives a date of 1750, but its subject heading points to ethnic groups in the 1800 to 1850 range, so the dating deserves a closer look before it is cited. Japanese color woodcuts of this kind were built up from a separate block for each color, pressed in sequence, and the wide format of a diptych gave printmakers room to show people and their dress in more detail than a single sheet allowed. Read it as a document of its period, with the exact date still open.
