Two sheets joined as a diptych make up this color woodcut, attributed to the engraver Matsushima Seikichi. Its listed subject is ethnic groups, a theme that drew Japanese printmakers during the Edo period, when foreign contact was tightly restricted and prints like this gave city viewers a glimpse of peoples they rarely met. The listed date of 1750 sits oddly with the subject heading, which points to the first half of the nineteenth century, so the dating deserves checking against other sources. Ukiyo-e prints were made in quantity and sold cheaply, so well-preserved impressions with strong color are especially valued today.
