A two-sheet color woodcut, this print is a diptych, so its scene runs across both halves and reads best when the sheets are viewed side by side. The catalog dates it to 1750, but its subject heading points to ethnic groups of 1800 to 1850, so the date may be uncertain. Japanese color woodcuts of this kind were built from separate carved blocks, one for each color, and a skilled engraver's cutting and registration determined how crisp the lines and how even the color appeared. The records name Matsushima Seikichi as engraver, a reminder that these prints were collaborative work involving a designer, carvers and printers.
