A two-sheet color woodcut, this diptych spreads one scene across a wide format that a single sheet could not hold. It was cut by Matsushima Seikichi, an engraver working in the Edo period, when woodblock printing was at its height and affordable prints reached a broad urban public. The subject is catalogued under ethnic groups for roughly 1800 to 1850, a time when Japanese artists showed growing curiosity about peoples beyond their own communities. The date given is 1750, which sits earlier than that subject range, so the period of the print is worth reading with some care.
