This print is a two-sheet diptych, a format that lets one scene run across a wide surface, and its color woodcut was cut by the engraver Matsushima Seikichi. The catalog gives a date of 1750, but its subject heading points to 1800 to 1850, so the period is uncertain. Ukiyo-e prints like this were built from separate carved blocks, one for each color, with an artist's design transferred to wood and then printed by hand. Their subjects of ordinary life and people were sold widely as affordable images, so the paired sheets are worth reading as a single composition.
