Set across two sheets that join into one wide scene, this color woodcut is a diptych, a format Japanese printmakers used when a subject needed more width than a single sheet allowed. The catalog names Matsushima Seikichi as engraver and gives a date of 1750, while its subject heading points to the period 1800 to 1850, so the dating is worth checking. Ukiyo-e prints were inexpensive, widely sold images, and paired sheets like these let the carved blocks show figures and surroundings at a generous scale.
