Two sheets joined as a diptych give this print its unusual shape, with the composition running across both halves so they read best side by side. The record credits the carving to Matsushima Seikichi and dates the work to 1750, yet its subject heading points to the period from 1800 to 1850, so the date is worth checking against other sources. Multicolor woodblock printing was still developing around the mid-eighteenth century, and images of foreign and regional peoples were a recurring interest in Japanese prints across the following decades.
