A two-sheet diptych, this color woodcut is cataloged as a left and right pair, so the two halves were meant to be read together as one scene. The record lists the engraver as Matsushima Seikichi and tags the subject as ethnic groups, a heading that points to depictions of foreign peoples. Its date is given as 1750, but the subject range of 1800 to 1850 suggests the print may belong to the later Edo period, when Japanese printmakers showed outsiders in increasing numbers. Woodblock prints like this one were inexpensive and widely circulated, which makes them valuable records of how Japanese audiences pictured people from beyond their borders.
