Built from two joined sheets, this color woodcut is a diptych, a format that let a printmaker stretch one scene across a wide field. The engraver is listed as Matsushima Seikichi, and the work belongs to the ukiyo-e tradition of Edo-period Japan, when multicolor woodblock prints were produced in quantity for a broad urban public. Its subject heading points to ethnic groups in the 1800 to 1850 range, a theme of interest when foreign peoples were largely known in Japan through reports and images rather than direct contact. The record gives a date of 1750, which sits awkwardly beside that subject range, so the dating is worth checking against other sources.
