Printed across two sheets as a diptych, this color woodcut is set apart by its wide format, which lets a single scene run across both halves of the paper. Its engraver, Matsushima Seikichi, worked within the Edo-period ukiyo-e tradition, where separate woodblocks were carved and inked for each color, so a print like this reflects the work of several hands. The catalog dates it to 1750 but files its subject under ethnic groups from 1800 to 1850, a mismatch worth keeping in mind for researchers. The composition depends on reading the two sheets together, so it is worth looking at how they join.
