Printed in Cincinnati and New York, this color lithograph advertised *Held by the Enemy*, a Civil War melodrama that toured American theaters in the late 1800s. The Strobridge Lithographing Company, based in Cincinnati, was one of the best-known makers of theatrical and circus posters of its day, and its large, brightly colored sheets were built to be read from across a street. Posters like this one were pasted on fences, storefronts and station walls to draw audiences to traveling productions. At 71 by 101 centimeters, it was sized to catch the eye of passersby.
