Few figures in Japanese verse are as well loved as Saigyō, the warrior-turned-monk named in this print's title by his secular name, Satō Norikiyo. Born into a family of samurai who guarded the palace, he left that service and entered Buddhist orders while still a young man, then spent much of his life traveling and writing waka poems about mountains, travel and the passing of things. Utagawa Kuniyoshi, one of the most inventive woodblock designers of the late Edo period, made this vertical two-sheet diptych around 1849 to 1852, when his heroic and historical subjects drew strong demand. The sheets are signed by the artist, and the portrait of a famous poet-priest shows how Kuniyoshi turned classical literary figures into vivid, theatrical images.
