Clare Leighton's wood engraving shows a baptism in North Carolina, a subject that rural Black Baptist and other churches in the South had long observed at creeks and rivers. The print was made in the late 1940s and later appeared in *The Frank C. Brown Collection of North Carolina Folklore*, published by Duke University Press in 1952, which gathered regional customs and beliefs. Leighton, an English-born artist who lived in the United States, was known for her precise, carefully cut line work on rural life, and this impression is numbered 50 of 150. Its appearance in a folklore volume shows how contemporary artists were used to record religious practices that were rarely documented in other ways.
