Where many views of Harlem from this period emphasize dense brick blocks, this lithograph turns to a street of modest clapboard houses, a contrast the title, "Small town Harlem," makes explicit. The name suggests the artist saw the neighborhood as a village within the city, a place of everyday domestic life for African American residents. The print dates to 1940 and carries the stamp of the New York City branch of the WPA Art Project, the federal Depression-era program that employed artists to make prints and paintings. Its pencil signature and dated stone reflect the careful, multi-step process of lithography.
