Taylor's lithograph shows a congregation gathered in a plain interior, with a stove that signals how modest a church like this one would have been in Washington, D.C. Its title, *Assembly Church*, and its subject, African American religious life in the city, place it among the Depression-era Realist prints that recorded ordinary neighborhood routines rather than monuments or grand events. Taylor's use of lithography, a medium suited to close tonal shading, lets the viewer study faces, posture, and the worn furnishings, which make the image a useful document of the period as well as a work of art.
