Titled *Papelero en el zócalo*, this 1943 lithograph shows a paper seller at work in the main square of Mexico City, a space long used for both public ceremony and everyday labor. Pablo O'Higgins, an American-born artist who spent most of his career in Mexico, made the print in the social realist style that flourished there in the 1940s, directing attention to working people who crowded the city's streets. The inscription on the reverse, "The poor and the rich," points to the contrast the image draws between the figure at the edge of the square and the more prosperous world around him. This impression is numbered 7 of an edition of 30.
