Beverly Page Yates, identified on the back of this sixth-plate daguerreotype as vice president of the Republic of Liberia, sits at a table holding a rolled sheet of paper, a pose that hints at the correspondence and documents of public office. Liberia had been founded by settlers sent out under the American Colonization Society, which was organized in 1817 to resettle African Americans in West Africa, and it declared independence in 1847. The photographer is unidentified, but the plate was later included in an exhibition of work by Augustus Washington, a Black daguerreotypist working in the same decade.
