Seated at a writing desk and turned three-quarters toward the camera, the man in this small sixth-plate daguerreotype is identified by an inscription on its back as Doctor J. S. Smith, senator from Bassa County, Liberia. The plate survives within the records of the American Colonization Society, founded in 1817 to resettle Black Americans in Liberia. Its photographer is unidentified, but it was later shown in an exhibition of work by Augustus Washington, an African American daguerreotypist, linking the portrait to the emigration movement of the 1850s.
