Dolley Madison sits at three-quarter length, facing the camera, in this half-plate daguerreotype made in 1848 at Mathew Brady's studio. She was in her late seventies and had been a widow since James Madison died in 1836. As the wife of the fourth president, she had long been admired in Washington for her social grace, and she was known for rescuing the Gilbert Stuart portrait of George Washington during the 1814 burning of the city. The portrait dates from the final year of her life, as she died in 1849. Early daguerreotypes like this one required the sitter to hold still for several seconds, so the calm pose reflects that demand.
