Among the portraits on this sheet is Oscar J. Dunn, a Black politician who rose to become lieutenant governor of Louisiana in 1868. The print reproduces an extract from the state's reconstructed constitution, drafted by a convention that met in New Orleans in early 1868 under the federal Reconstruction Acts, which required new state constitutions that guaranteed voting rights regardless of race. Sheets like this one, with portraits of delegates and legislators, recorded the men who took part in that government at a moment when their roles were new and contested. Dunn's career ended abruptly when he died in office in 1871.
