The Emancipation Proclamation, issued by President Abraham Lincoln on January 1, 1863, was a presidential war measure that declared enslaved people in Confederate-held territory free. This printed version pairs the text of the document with portraits and an ornamental border, a format popular in the years after the proclamation, when families and churches hung such pages on their walls as a record of freedom. Worth noticing is how the decoration frames the words: the portraits of leading figures and the symmetrical border turn a legal notice into a keepsake meant for display in homes and meeting rooms.
